Kabala Family Rugby Hall FAQ
During the grand opening of the Family Kabala Rugby Hall in 2008, students helped answer frequently asked questions of visitors.
-
The concept was initially presented to the University by Jim Mathias in 2006 as a way to establish a presence on campus, collect and honor the history of the Club, and to help recruit new rugby players.
-
East Area Locker Room (EALR) is where the Penn State Rugby offices, Team Sports Coordinator, team meeting facilities, trainer facilities and weight training facilities are located. Originally designed for the main hallway, the display was moved around the corner when field hockey and lacrosse offices were located adjacent to that space. The Hall is designed to be movable to a new location should offices be relocated or a new rugby facility be built.
-
The display was designed, manufactured, and installed by Forty Nine Degrees, a sports branding enterprise based in Coldwater, Ohio. They also built the displays for women’s basketball at Bryce Jordan Center and the Lorenzo Pavilion wrestling display at Rec Hall.
-
A steering committee of 11 alumni worked on all the details of the design and content.
-
A standing committee of the Penn State Rugby Alumni Club will manage the process from here on out.
-
It was important to the committee to try to include as many eras as possible and to achieve relative gender balance. Given the size of the background image enlargements, many of the older photographs did not have sufficient resolution for inclusion. In the last 3 years we have collected a significant number of great professional images as well as having access to the phenomenal collection of Broni Grala.
Except for the Milestones History section, there is no correlation between panel elements and the adjacent photographs selected.

Fixtures, graphics ,and plaques are made of aluminum and avonite, which is etched and color-filled. Background images are printed on heavy vinyl, then laminated with a clear coat film. If the display ever moves, that “wallpaper” is the only element that will need to be reproduced.

Help us tell more of Penn State Rugby’s history and keep our displays up-to-date! The information we’re featuring at the Kabala Family Rugby Hall is only as strong as we’re able to retell history.
If you see any errors in the display descriptions, names, or dates, please let us know. We will research, verify, and make changes. Likewise, if you have information, articles, or photos that could add important context to any element of Penn State Rugby’s history, we want to hear it! We will be aggregating new information and updating the “tour” quarterly.
